A LITTLE ABOUT OUR HISTORY
In 1955 we began our journey as Peter Rothenburg Electrical Instruments (Pty) Ltd, and in that time have dealt with and explored all areas and developments in industrial instrumentation and the manufacture of Electrical Panel Instruments.
From there we began to expand our scope to include Laboratory and Workshop Test equipment, eventually shifting our focus and offerings to solutions for the process control marketplace.
In 1987 we changed our name to Prei Instrumentation, expanding our offerings to include so much more than vibration detection, monitoring, and non-contact thermometry. And so, in 1993, we expanded into pressure, level, and flow markets, bolstered by the appointment of our sales support team.
Since 1997 we have acquired the distribution rights for a range of industry-leading brands including CCC, BKVibro, VOITH, OSI Soft, and Istech, Turtle Tough to complement our existing range of companies.
This bolstered our offers of engineering services from our technical division, which specializes on services for rotating machinery control and protection systems.
This has allowed us to expand our services to include Product Support, Project Execution, Root Cause Analysis, Condition Monitoring and Data Analysis, and general health investigations.
This helped us meet a sharply rising demand from our clients with solutions that make the difference, positioning us as a leading Level 2 BB-EE certified company with a 51% BBE-EEE shareholding.

Steve Herbst, the Managing Director who has delegated his previous responsibilities, eg. our water instrumentation portfolio the gas monitoring stuff. To spend more time managing the company as well as being more involved with the rotating machinery division. When he is not doing that, he fiddles with our computer system, have you ever heard a computer scream? Steve was trained as an Instrument Technician at Iscor, moved to AECI, gained his sales experience at L+N and KENT Instrumentation (especially analysers), then went on to specialize in Instrumentation /Electrical Projects Engineering and Management both for SAB and Illovo Sugar. He joined Prei in 1997 and was appointed the group director in 2001 and became a shareholder. He functions best when attempting to sell our range of analysers to some of the big boys in the water industries. For fun he does crazy things like racing a Westbank V8 car, but hey!!! Whatever turns you on.
Mrs Cheryll Smith is the omnipotent one, to whom we all must submit. Why? Because she is the financial Director, admin supervisor and her word is law. Before joining Prei in 2003, Cheryll had 15 years in banking, with F.N.B, Standard and Central Merchant Bank. She resides on a farm, where she does things with horses.
Pieter Erasmus is product manager for our range of instrumentation for monitoring vibration and rotating machinery, and is also involved with our gas detection range of products. Piet started as an appy electrician at the SA Air Force, spent time at PPC and was acting electrical engineer at Mogale G.M. before joining us in 2004. He thinks gardening is fun too !!!
Then there is Marlene Ehlers who is responsible for our range of Laboratory and Analytical equipment, she's very smart, we couldn't even spell Laboratory until she joined us. Marlene is responable for the municipal portable and waste water markets. Marlene spent the last 22 years working at Emfuleni Council as first a water technologist and then as the Laboratory Supervisor, joining us in 2010.
Joined us in 2015 to specialise with our Rotating machinery Division, compressor Controls and Vibrating Monitoring Analysis.
Neville Jegels, Analytical Product Manager, is the guy looking after our analyser business in mine water, industrial, food/beverage industries. Neville has 17 years of instrumentation experience from workshop calibration, field-work, technical support and sales, joining us in 2011. He also dabbles in alternative energy systems and set up his house on solar panel power, until it hailed... end of story.
Has joined our Rotating Machinery Division primarily for life cycle management of the customer's products.
Ziyanda Mhlauli is the second member of administration and receptionist. When all fails and panic sets in call Ziyanda, the only one who knows where everything is. Ziyanda has been with us since 2008, and is an absolute gem.
David Maremani is our store assistant, local handyman and instrument assembler and packer. We have even trained him to do fiberglass work but he does not enjoy the itch.
Wian du Preez is a Rotating Machinery Application Sales Engineer. He is a young Father (has a daughter) and his hobby is helping his family farm.
He has many years experience with Control Systems especially DCS’s.
